Gonna Party Like It's

1999 was one of the greatest years for movies in the history of cinema. Just looking over a list of movies from that year can sort of blow your mind. Magnolia, The Iron Giant, Boys Don’t Cry, Office Space, Three Kings, Toy Story 2,  The Straight Story, Dogma, just a few of the diverse and interesting films to hit screens that year.

20 years on, it seems like a good idea to compile a list of the best films of that year just for discussion. Here’s what we think:

1.       Being John Malkovitch
2. Audition
3. The Talented Mr. Ripley
4. Magnolia
5. Bringing Out the Dead
6. eXistenz
7. Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai
8. All About My Mother
9. Eyes Wide Shut
10. The Iron Giant
11. Office Space
12. Election
13. The Blair Witch Project
14. Fight Club
15. Dogma
16. Man on the Moon
17. The Red Violin
18. Bowfinger
19. The Matrix
20. Three Kings
21. Boys Don’t Cry
22. The Straight Story
23. American Beauty*
24. The Insider
25. The Limey

Feel free to agree, disagree, tell us what we missed, what we got totally wrong in the comments.

    1. There is meant to be a footnote, but it seems to have gone missing. It was about how all these films statures had shifted over time, none more so than AB. 1999 me thought it was deep, profound, and beautiful. I wasn't alone. That Best Picture Oscar points to that. Now I can barely squeeze it into a top 25, and that was done grudgingly. Spacey has tarnished it, obviously, but that isn't all. Little about it has aged well.
