Paul Verhoeven is a master of caustic satire. Look at this
run of films:
If one were of a mind to critique his output during that
period negatively, the obvious jab would be that his satire is too on the nose;
that he bludgeons the audience. The film that is most likely to face that claim
is Starship Troopers, a brilliant, over the top, amazing attack on Fascism. The
damn thing turned out to be prescient.
And yet, more than 25 years later the Twitter dot com and
other social media sites are overrun with American conservatives (or, as we
call them, CHUDs) not getting it.
