What the hell is going on at Warner Brothers? Yesterday we heard that they were scrapping the
Batgirl movie. We aren’t talking about
cancelling a movie at the script stage, or in pre-production, or even early in
shooting. This movie was complete, had reshoots and then got dropped off a
cliff. Reportedly, WB/DC had spent 40 Million dollars on the project which they
will now make no attempt to recoup.
This is
even more insane when you realize that Batgirl was to feature the great Michael
Keaton returning to the role of Batman after 30 years. There is a large
contingency of fans that want that. The novelty alone would likely have caused
the film to at least break even. And this isn’t about distribution costs. The
movie wasn’t being sent to theaters. It was getting launched on HBOMAX, then
likely onto physical media (Couch Thing would have grabbed a bluray special edition,
especially if it was a great steelbook). There was money to be made, and they
just are not interested.
It
seems that Warner isn’t just trashing DC multiverse projects. Now we get word
that the new Scooby-Doo movie has been shelved as well, at a cost of 30
million. This one may be even crazier. Has a Scooby-Doo project ever failed to
pay out? The Scoob is beloved of four
generations and always in demand.
So,
what the hell is happening at WB? What’s your theory?
