Farewell Buck Henry

Buck Henry has died. Henry wrote The Graduate. He co-created Get Smart. He appeared on Saturday Night Live many times. He was a hugely talented writer with a biting, sardonic wit. Perhaps the most memorable of his acting roles, in my thinking, was his appearance as himself in Robert Altman's The Player, in which he lampooned his own image deliciously. He will be missed. RIP

Do the dead speak? Starfish and the types of grief

The dead don't really speak to us, and if they did they would have nothing to say. Grief is a definitive human experience. It is something that we all share, yet it's personal and even unique . No two people experience grief in the same way. Starfish understands this. On the surface it's a horror film; an end of the world tale. It truth, though, it's more of a meditation on grief and the isolation that it breeds. Virginia Gardner plays Aubrey, a young woman who has returned home to attend her best friend's funeral . After the service she breaks into her dead friend's apartment and spends the night there. This attempt to feel close to her friend doesn't really help. When she awakes , it seems that the world has ended. Strange creatures, Lovecraftian monsters really, roam the empty streets. Let's sit here by the fire and discuss The Mandalorian

Before we get started, this is the mandatory warning that everything below is filled with spoilers. If you have not yet seen the first two episodes of The Mandalorian , then stop reading now. You've been warned. The Mandalorian is basically a western. It opens with a scene that would fit in any Sergio Leone film. Inside a rather dank looking saloon, obvious baddies are harassing a meek fellow, and threatening violence. The doors open and the hero of the piece saunters in. The Mandalorian is a silent, lanky presence. He brings to mind a young Charles Bronson or Clint Eastwood. Within moments he has killed the bullies, and revealed himself as a bounty hunter. The twist in the scene is that he is here to capture the milquetoast man that he just saved. We follow our now obviously more antihero than hero as he goes to get paid and seek out another job. He is led to Werner Herzog, who adds gravitas to a character that we would expect (this being Star Wars, after all) to b

Cemetery Man: A Review

The “Zombie” genre has been around for quite some time. To be fair, “Zombie” movies are really a sub-genre, of a sub-genre. Horror is the genre, Vampires make up a sub-genre, and what is a zombie but another type of vampire? (maybe it’s the other way around: what is a vampire but a sort of zombie?). Anyway, the genre really got going with George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead . Romero saw the zombies as a metaphor for us, and used the fright film structure to satirize American Society. Romero took the satire even further with Dawn of the Dead , which pitted consumerist zombies against consumerist survivors in a modern shopping mall. The Dead Series spawned a third film, Day of the Dead , and the parody Return of the Living Dead , and its sequels. Dario Argento (who had a connection with Dawn of the Dead ) made many low budget, extremely gory zombie flicks in Italy. Along the way many films have imitated Both Romero and Argento.
